The Vampire in the Cinema and TV

I watched Dark Shadows when I was a kid. Loved it. It was creepy and interesting. I can still hum the theme music. I even liked the remake with Ben Cross as Barnabas. Forever Knight is also a favorite though I'm still not 100% sure what happened at the end. I also really enjoyed Kindred: The Embraced, which was based on the White Wolf role-playing game, Vampire: the Masquerade. The vampire Prince of the City, Julian Luna, was played by Mark Frankel. The series lasted 8 episodes in 1996. Mark Frankel perished in a motorcycle accident in Sept. 1996. And let's not forget Buffy and Angel.

Recently we had Moonlight and Blood Ties, neither of which lasted long. Now True Blood is on HBO and L.J. Smith's Vampire Diaries is coming to the CW.

Of course there are many more vampire films than TV shows. I collect vampire films and have a penchant for really really awful films. Two of my favorites are A Polish Vampire in Burbank (1985) and Uncle Was a Vampire (an Italian film, Tempi duri per i vampiri, 1959). Both are so bad that they are funny. I'm not sure that I could pick a favorite film though. I loved Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). Gary Oldman was a terrific Dracula. I also love Dracula (1931) with Bela Lugosi. I like most of the Hammer Films with Christopher Lee. I could go on; I won't.

But I'm really at a loss to think of which book or series that I'd like to see as a film or TV show. Any suggestions?

Qwill's Qwestion: Do you have a favorite vampire film or TV show? What book or series would you like to see made into a movie or TV show?

  1. First of all, I love vampires. The Count, Count Chocula, Barnabus... you name it. I love them.

I loved all the shows you mentioned, although I think Moonlight was one of my faves. The Canadians had a really great show for one season called Ultraviolet as well that was pretty amazing. I have both the newer Dark Shadows and Kindred on DVD. :)

My favorite vampire movie? A really cheesy one from many years ago called Dance of the Damned. It prompted me to write my first novel in high school.

Hmm... what series would I like to see made into a TV show? I'd love to see Kimberly Raye's 'Dead End Dating' series on HBO or the like - imagine a vampire dating service! In Lost Wages, of course! I'm sure there are others too, but that's the only one coming to mind. :)

  2. Well, I have to say that Dark Shadows was my first introduction to Vampires and I remember that I couldn't wait to watch it with my Mom and Sister.

I loved Moonlight and wished they would have given it a longer run.

I can't believe that the first book series that came to mind was Kimberly Raye's "Dead End Dating" series, I guess GMTA Crazy Lady!!!!

  4. Oh, I was a HUGE Forever Knight fan, even attended FK conventions and wrote stories about it! Yes, fanfic and everything! I own a coat that Lucien LaCroix wore in my favorite episode, it has a gash in the front where the stake went in during a dream sequence. Next time I see you, I'll be sure to talk your ear off about how and why the show ended! I also ran home every day to watch Dark Shadows, and would always get to be Angelique when we played dress up (a flannel nightgown pinch-hit as a colonial-era gown.) My sister always got to be Josette. She still has her Official Josette's Music Box from back then.
