Interview with Vlad LaShay and Giveaway - June 14, 2012

Hannah Jayne writes The Underworld Detection Agency Chronicles. Vlad LaShay not only works for the Agency, but also shares an apartment with Sophie Lawson and Nina LaShay. Vlad has a front row seat to many of the goings on.  Please welcome Vlad to The Qwillery.

TQ:  Hi, Vlad. Welcome to the Qwillery.

VLAD:  On behalf of myself and the entire Vampire Empowerment and Restoration Movement community, thank you.

TQ:  Some of my readers may not know who you are. I know, how wrong is that? Can you tell us a little about yourself?

VLAD:  And that is what the Vampire Empowerment movement is all about. Breathers -- er, humans, know Edward. They know Lestat. They know Angel. But when it comes to a true vampire such as myself, nothing. Perhaps because I don't moon, brood, or sparkle. I am currently the chief of operations at the Underworld Detection Agency and one of the founders of --
NINA:  SNORE! Vlad, no one wants to hear about that. They want the juicy stuff. Vlad -- or should I say Louis, because that's his real name -- was turned when he was sixteen. What was that, Lou --
VLAD:  I refuse to respond to my breather name.
NINA:  I'm totally dating myself but it was at least 115 years ago. I changed him. It was a beautiful story, really. The young, beautiful French ingenue tracked down by her still-human sister. She brought LOUIS to me when he was dying of Polio. I changed him. And then he changed his name to Vlad -- I know, real original, right? And started dressing like Count Chocula.
VLAD:  Get OUT, Nina!

TQ:  I understand that you are the head of the San Fransisco chapter of the Vampire Empowerment and Restoration Movement. What exactly do you do with VERM?

VLAD:  With all due respect, we don't shorten it. What we do is seek to return the vampire back to its true, celebrated yet terrifying, role in society. We are moody bastions of hell and are dangerously powerful overlords.
SOPHIE:  Seriously, Vlad, are you like, physically incapable of picking up your dirty socks? Oh! Are you doing an interview? Sorry. But seriously, pick up your socks. It's disgusting.
VLAD:  Can't you see I'm busy? I'll do it later! Geez!

TQ:  You've recently been promoted at the Underworld Detection Agency. Please tell us about your new job.

VLAD:  I have, thank you. My responsibilities haven't changed all that much. I manage a subset of demons --
NINA:  No one cares! He plays that stupid paper football game with a werevamp from the mail room at his new job.
SOPHIE:  And occasionally sneaks off into the supply closet with Kale when he thinks no one's looking!
VLAD:  You guuuuuuys! I am WORKING!

TQ:  What are some of your favorite things to do in San Francisco?

VLAD:  Sorry about that, Sally. Some people can have no decorum. San Francisco is truly a wonderful city both under and above ground. I spend a good deal of time in the Haight and love the Red Vic -- it's one of the coolest theaters ever. And I love all the clubs around Howard Street and the Queen Anne on Sutter -- everyone thinks its haunted! Cable cars are fun. I love China Town, but stay away from North Beach for obvious reasons.

TQ:  Tell us something about Nina LaShay (your Aunt) that she would not want us to know.

VLAD:  She is supremely annoying. She thinks the world revolves around her. And that dress she passes off as a Balenciaga? She got it at Target.
NINA:  Slander! Libel! I'm going to stake you SO BAD when Sally leaves.

TQ:  What do you think of Sophie Lawson?

SOPHIE:  Remember who pays your rent, Vlad.
VLAD:  Lovely woman. Truly. Mad as a hatter.
SOPHIE:  I'm getting the stake.

TQ:  What next for you and your chronicler, Hannah Jayne?

VLAD:  To be perfectly honest, I'm a little peeved with Hannah Jayne. First, she allows multiple people to call me Count Chocula which I am totally not. And then she went ahead and got my lame aunt Nina her own spin off series. HIGH STAKES comes out next May! Can you believe that? What the heck does Nina do that's so damn interesting? Who cares if she's going to New York! Not only that, Hannah Jayne is doing casting calls for live-action UDA webisodes. Fathom Productions is calling for Sophies and Ninas, but do you see a posting for Vlads anywhere? Neither do I. She's seriously going to have to grovel if she wants me in the next book. Seriously.

TQ:  Thank you for visiting with us at The Qwillery!

VLAD:  The pleasure was all mine. Thank you and thank you to our readers!

She’s the new head of the Underworld Detection Agency’s strangest division. What a nightmare…

Being a human immune to magic helped Sophie Lawson get promoted. It’s also made her a major, very reluctant player in a game that stretches beyond even the Underworld. Having handsome buttoned-down Englishman Will as her new guardian is one tempting blessing, especially since sexy fallen angel Alex is mysteriously MIA lately. But as a frightening number of demons start disappearing around the city, Sophie suspects that an Armageddon-level prophecy is about to become everyone’s nightmare. And her investigation is testing her bravery—and Will’s unexpected vulnerability—in ways neither could predict. Now Sophie and Will are fast running out of time as an unstoppable evil prepares to lay waste to demons and humans alike…

  7. I'm kind of mad about having to pick a favorite vampire because I really don't know any that I *like*. I'm sort of put off by the whole *dead* thing. Bill from the Sookie series was okay at first, but he kind of wimped out...gosh. I don't like the vamps in Ilona Andrews...or the Briggs...dang it. Sheesh. Fine. You have forced me to pick the vamp, Patrick, in Under Witch Moon. But I don't really like him either.

  9. Stefan from Patricia Briggs series is probably one of the nicest and most honorable, but I totally picture Bones looking like James Marsters from Buffy/Angel. And, that is mighty fine.
