Interview with Sarah Dearly and Thierry de Bennicoeur from the Immortality Bite Mysteries by Michelle Rowen - August 16, 2013

Please welcome Sarah Dearly and Thierry de Bennicoeur from the Immortality Bite Mysteries by Michelle Rowen. We first met Sarah and Thierry in the Immortality Bites series. They are an interesting couple and one of my favorites!

TQ:  Hi Sarah. Welcome to The Qwillery Do you think that Thierry might answer a couple of questions too?

Sarah: Thanks for the invite! Hmm… good question. Let me check. (Pulls out phone to send a text. Waits. Receives text back.) Okay, yes, he’ll be here in a moment.

TQ: Sarah, tell us a little bit about yourself. What did you do before you were turned into a vampire?

Sarah: That seems like such a long time ago! But B.V. (Before Vampification) I was a personal assistant at a marketing and advertising agency. Prior to that, I was an aspiring actress. I’ve waited tables, tended bar, done odd jobs. Whatever it takes.

TQ: Personally I'm very happy that you ended up with Thierry. What is it like working with him?

Sarah: I’m happy too! Working with Thierry is fantastic since I get to see him all the time. Back in the day, when he owned nightclubs, he would disappear into his office to do his work for hours on end. Now he can’t escape from me. LOL! I thought spending so much time together, what with us being so different from each other, might cause some problems, but so far our problems have mostly been caused by other people, not each other!

(Thierry arrives, looking slightly annoyed. He glances at his watch.)

TQ:  Hi Thierry. Do you enjoy having Sarah work with you now?

Thierry:  Hello. (Turns to Sarah) Sarah, I’m not sure I agree with offering up information about our current lives with such freedom. Who is this woman? Do you trust her?

Sarah:  Trust her? Well, now that you mention it… (eyes interviewer curiously) …yeah, sure. She looks very trustworthy enough to me. It’s fine, Thierry. Don’t be paranoid.

Thierry:  I’m not paranoid.

Sarah:  She asked if you like having me work with you. (raises eyebrows) Is that a difficult question for you to answer?

Thierry:  (sighs) Not at all. Having Sarah accompany me on my assignments for the vampire council has been truly wonderful. She has a way of viewing the difficulties we’ve faced with the optimism I perhaps lack. She’s an asset for me, both professionally and personally.

Sarah:  (smiles) Good answer!

TQ:  Sarah, tell us something about Thierry's and your work for the Ring? What is the Ring?

Sarah:  Sure. Not that long ago, Thierry agreed to become a consultant for the Ring, the official vampire council, which means he is given assignments requiring travel all over the place so he can investigate potential problems, crimes, and mysteries involving vampires—who might be the victims or the criminals, depending on the situation. Personally, I know that he only took this job—which comes with a fifty year commitment—because the council, who are shadowy and creepy vamps, threatened my life. But he won’t admit this to me in so many words. Yet.

Thierry:  Let’s change the subject, shall we?

TQ:  Thierry, which skills does Sarah bring to her work with the Ring that compliment yours? And be nice! We all know you are somewhat older, have more experience, etc.

Thierry:  That really wasn’t much of a subject change. All right, then. As I said before, Sarah is an asset. Her positivity is so important to me. She possesses endless belief in both me and those whose paths cross with hers in our travels. This is sometimes a problem, I will admit, as she has a tendency to trust even those who haven’t yet earned that trust. (Eyes The Qwillery interviewer with continued skepticism). Bottom line, I may have more life experience, but without Sarah I don’t believe I would as easily deal with the commitment I made to the Ring.

Sarah:  A commitment that you made under duress. Right?

Thierry:  Next subject please?

TQ:  Sarah, name one thing that you wish Thierry would lighten up about. Thierry, name one thing that you wish Sarah would be more careful about.

Sarah:  He already knows I want him to be less secretive about his past. It seems that lately a lot of that past has been coming back to haunt him—sometimes literally. If he’d just be more open with me, it would save a whole lot of time.

Thierry:  Compared to how it was in the beginning between us, Sarah, I am a veritable open book.

Sarah:  Yes, but there are a lot of pages in that book. And some of them are written in a different language.

Thierry:  Fair enough. What would I like Sarah to be more careful about? She should be careful about uncovering too much of my past she continues to hold interest in. She might not like what she finds and this is one of my greatest fears. She doesn’t realize I keep my secrets close to my chest in order to protect her. I adore her and I never want to lose her for any reason.

Sarah  (melts a little): Okay, fine. The feeling is mutual. But trust me, we will revisit this topic again soon.

TQ:  Sarah, can you give us a hint at what's up next for you?

Sarah:  More fun, more adventure, more mystery! More romance! More, more, more!! Oh, and I’d love to one day get Thierry to wear a color other than black. It’s a goal.

Thierry:  Some goals may be harder to achieve than others.

TQ:  Thank you Sarah and Thierry for joining us at The Qwillery

Sarah:  Thank you! It was fun.

Thierry:  Mmm. Yes, it was…fun.

Traveling with him to Las Vegas for his first assignment, they encounter a child beauty pageant contestant from hell, as well as a vampire serial killer leaving victims drained of blood, potentially exposing the existence of vampires to the whole world. Fledgling vampire Sarah Dearly knew what she was getting into when she married master vampire Thierry de Bennicoeur. As an agent of the Ring, Thierry is sent all over the world to solve vampire crimes and keep them secret from humans. And now Sarah’s on the job with him—for better or worse.

Right after their wedding in Las Vegas, Sarah and Thierry get their next assignment: Three vampires have gone missing in Salem, Massachusetts, and they need to find out why. Their contact in Salem turns out to be a local lothario with a penchant for witches, but before he can help them, he suddenly goes up in smoke—leaving behind nothing but a stain on the ground and a seemingly impossible mystery.

Did a witchy ex-mistress cast a deadly spell, or is there something even more sinister happening to the vampires of Salem? Getting to the truth may require raising the undead, with a little help from the owners of a vampire-friendly bed and breakfast.
