Bitter Bite Blog Tour: Interview with Jennifer Estep and Giveaways

Please welcome Jennifer Estep to The Qwillery as part of the Bitter Bite Blog Tour. Bitter Bite will be published on February 23rd by Pocket Books.

The QwilleryWelcome to The Qwillery. Bitter Bite is the 14th Elemental Assassin novel. How do you keep things straight from novel to novel in such a long running series?

Jennifer Estep:  Thanks for hosting me. I appreciate it.

I know a lot of authors have series bibles, full of information about their characters and books, but I don’t have one of those. I tried to write a series bible once, but I quickly figured out that it would take me months and months – time that I could be using to write the next book in the series. So I decided to do that, rather than write a series bible.

I spend so much time writing the books and then reading and re-reading them for revisions, copy edits, and page proofs that sometimes I feel like the words are embedded in my brain. LOL. I have a pretty good memory when it comes to the books, so most of the time, I just rely on that. But if I have a question, I just go back and re-read whatever passage that I need to.

TQWhich character in the Elemental Assassin series has surprised you the most?

JE:  I would say Gin Blanco, my assassin heroine. She was really reserved and closed off, even from her friends, in Spider’s Bite, the first book in the series. But as the series has gone along, she’s made a lot of great friends and has really opened up to the people that she cares about. I think she’s really grown as a character over the course of the series.

TQDescribe Bitter Bite in 140 characters or less.

JE:  When a long-lost relative turns up in Ashland, it's a not-so-welcome blast from the past for Gin – one that quickly turns dangerous.

TQTell us something about Bitter Bite that is not found in the book description.

JE:  I had a lot of fun writing the villain in this book. I think the villain in Bitter Bite is one of the best villains that I’ve written in the entire series, and I hope that readers love to hate this person as much as I do.

TQWhat's next?

JE:  Unwanted, an e-novella in my Elemental Assassin series, will be out on July 18. It’s from Finnegan Lane’s point of view, and I think that Finn fans will really enjoy it, especially after everything that happens in Bitter Bite.

Unraveled, Elemental Assassin #15, will be out on Aug. 30.

Also, Bright Blaze of Magic, book #3 in my Black Blade young adult urban fantasy series, will be out on April 26.

TQThank you for joining us at The Qwillery.

JE:  Thanks for hosting me. I appreciate it. Happy reading, everyone! ☺

Bitter Bite
Elemental Assassin 14
Pocket Books, February 23, 2016
Mass Market Paperback and eBook, 400 pages

Which is stronger: blood ties or a battle-tested friendship? That’s the question Gin Blanco asks when a friend’s long-lost relative strolls into town. The suspicious reunion is a surprise for everyone—and a big problem for Gin. Book fourteen in the New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series RT Book Reviews calls “unbeatable entertainment!”

It’s not easy being queen bee of an underworld abuzz with crooks and killers. Wielding my potent Ice and Stone elemental magic will only get me so far—my real secret is my tight-knit makeshift family, a motley crew of cops and criminals, dwarves and playboys. My foster brother Finnegan Lane is my right-hand man, but when his suddenly not-dead relative comes back into the picture, I’m the one on the outside looking in.

It’s funny how life works: one minute your best friend is rock-steady, and the next he’s doe-eyed and buying into this whole loving-relative routine to the point of ignoring you. I’d like to be happy for Finn, I really would. But all of my instincts are telling me that beneath the syrupy sweet demeanor and old-fashioned charm, this sudden interloper is planning something. The whole shtick leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. This person might have avoided the grave once, but I’ll put anyone who hurts Finn in the ground—for good.
